2017 NHL Realistic Expectation Trade Board
This trade board is a realistic look at the NHL trade landscape compared to what you may see elsewhere in the media. This is being made to simmer people down on some of the crazy rumours that come out this time of year. Change will be reflected as daily as possible to keep things accurate. The percentages will increase for certain players as the playoff picture gets clearer and general managers are more clear about who they're willing to move.
PLAYERS THAT MORE THAN LIKELY WILL BE TRADED:
1. Patrick Eaves - DEALT TO ANAHEIM - for a conditional 2017 2nd round pick.
2. Brian Boyle - DEALT TO TORONTO - for Byron Froese and a 2017 2nd round pick.
3. Martin Hanzal - DEALT TO MINNESOTA - with Ryan White and a 2017 4th round pick for a 2017 1st round pick, a 2018 2nd round pick, a conditional 2019 4th round pick and Grayson Downing. ARI retains 50% salary.
4. Thomas Vanek - 80% - Detroit is falling out of the playoff race quickly and Vanek provides teams with a cheap scoring option on the wing - enigmatic but a high reward if he delivers. It's not the first time Vanek finds himself as a rental. Detroit has some issues at forward going into the expansion draft which hampers the chance of re-signing him.
5. Radim Vrbata - 70% - Teams will have to figure out what their cap situation looks like before trading for Vrbata. As a pending UFA, I want to say he's definitely going to go but he didn't as a UFA with the Canucks only a year ago. If a team can fit him in despite his bonus structure, I think this time he does go to a team in need of a boost in their shooting percentage. Vrbata is due for more goals based on his amount of shots - only scoring at a 6.8% clip. It's worth a gamble for some teams.
6. Kevin Shattenkirk - DEALT TO WASHINGTON - with Pheonix Copley for Zach Sanford, Brad Malone, 2017 1st round pick, conditional 2019 2nd round pick and other conditional picks. STL retains 39% salary.
7. Shane Doan - 60% - The Coyotes would love to grab an asset for him and I'm not entirely sure he wouldn't come back - he might still have a year left in him during the summer and he won't move from Arizona regardless anyways. It's about the fit. After a public interview where Doan sounded angry about his friend Martin Hanzal's trade, it's believed that Doan is more open to going to a few other places with 2 teams specifically on the top of his list. If there was ever a time for Doan to move, it'd be now.
8. Brendan Smith - DEALT TO NY RANGERS - for a 2018 2nd round pick, 2017 3rd round pick.
9. Patrick Sharp - 50% - The latest word here is that Sharp has an injury that may prevent a trade from occurring. Some teams have interest in floating around a conditional pick based on games played. Due to Sharp's playoff experience, it's not necessarily over yet for him in Dallas nor is the chances over for him to move on. Even TSN took him off their trade bait list - I'll keep it 50/50 until proven otherwise.
10. Johnny Oduya - DEALT TO CHICAGO - for Mark McNeill and a conditional 2018 4th round pick. DAL retains 50% salary.
PLAYERS THAT COULD BE TRADED...BUT THERE ARE ROADBLOCKS INVOLVED:
11. Matt Duchene - 45% - In Joe Sakic's mind today, this goes to the summer. However, never underestimate the desperation of a general manager. There's a lot of parity right now and acquiring a high-end talent like Matt Duchene could make-or-break your season. Jim Rutherford picking up Phil Kessel in the summer of 2015 helped bring Pittsburgh to a Stanley Cup and teams took notice. It didn't surprise me when Nick Kypreos mentioned the Penguins could have interest in Duchene. I don't expect a trade whatsoever, but it's NOT impossible and it's more probable than Gabriel Landeskog. The asking price is extremely high - reported to be a top prospect, an NHL ready player and a 1st round pick - and that's likely to curb anything past March 1.
12. Gabriel Landeskog - 40% - A lot of the stuff I said about Duchene applies here, but the caveat is Landy is the captain; the heart and soul of the Avalanche. He's still trying hard in a down-year and Avalanche fans are noticing. He's younger than Duchene, brings a more physical game and is a left winger on a team low on prospects at that position. If the right deal comes around he could move but I expect it to happen less than a Duchene deal. That being said, different teams that target Landeskog over Duchene could have better assets for Sakic to add.
13. Jannik Hansen - DEALT TO SAN JOSE - for Nikolay Goldobin and a conditional 2017 4th round pick.
14. Ben Bishop - DEALT TO LA - with a 2017 5th round pick for Erik Cernak, Peter Budaj, a 2017 7th round pick and a conditional pick, TB retains 20% salary.
15. Alexandre Burrows - DEALT TO OTTAWA - for Jonathan Dahlen. Burrows re-signs in Ottawa, 2 years at a 2.5M cap hit.
16. Patrik Berglund - RE-SIGNS IN ST. LOUIS - for 5 years, 3.875M cap hit.
17. Michael Stone - DEALT TO CALGARY - for a 2017 3rd round pick, conditional 2018 5th round pick, ARI retains 50% salary.
18. Ron Hainsey - DEALT TO PITTSBURGH - for a 2017 2nd round pick, Danny Kristo, CAR retains 50% salary
DARKHORSE CANDIDATES THAT COULD GET TRACTION CLOSER TO 3:00 P.M. ET
19. Tyler Johnson - 25% - It really sounds like Yzerman is thinking about trading him, and there are several reasons why. He has Stamkos coming back at C, Brayden Point is on the way up and he simply can't afford all 3 of Johnson, Drouin and Palat as RFAs this summer. His name has been linked in almost-trades, so the chance of him going is there. Still on the unlikely side.
20. Dmitry Kulikov - 20% - The Sabres just got him in the summer, so I'm not entirely sure they want to move him. An extension could be agreed upon at a later date. If a team came in with some good draft picks or a solid prospect, it could lean Tim Murray the other way. He's averaging 22 minutes a game.
21. Ryan Miller - 20% - His trade list is small, so the only teams that can grab him realistically are San Jose and Anaheim. San Jose says they're content with Aaron Dell. In other words, it's a 20% chance that the Ducks feel he's an upgrade on Jonathan Bernier. Otherwise, he won't move. Calgary has interest, but that seems like a reach.
22. Jarome Iginla - 20% - Based on what we've seen in Colorado, Iginla is done. This is probably his last ride. You'd think teams would jump on the opportunity to be the landing place for his final cup but it's difficult to envision him on a scoring line anymore which makes the fit challenging. His NMC cuts a lot of teams out of the mix and his salary is too high to the point where Colorado either has to retain 50% or they have to wait until exactly March 1 to pull it off.
23. P-A Parenteau - 20% - A guy that was a waiver claim might get a draft pick? It's not out of the realm of possibility and Parenteau has been a solid contributor. The next game or two will decide whether or not NJ deals him out, but we'll keep the percentage low for now. Seems like a deadline day decision. He's also hurt after blocking a shot.
24. Kyle Quincey - 20% - Another guy on the Devils who barely signed before training camp who might get a draft pick. Depth D-men usually go for something around this time and Quincey has been around for a while to provide experience. Ken Holland once dealt a 1st rounder for him. Is a team willing to deal a pick for him? I don't know.
25. Brian Gionta - 20% - He has told the Sabres he doesn't want to go anywhere, so I'd be surprised if he gets dealt. I've also seen players change their minds before and Gionta is getting older with one cup on his resume from 2003. A few teams have called.
26. Michal Neuvirth - 10% - The Flyers aren't out of it yet but Ron Hextall has told people he isn't buying this year. He has two UFA goalies and Neuvirth is more likely to go than Mason. A tough goalie market may stop a trade here and Hextall isn't just giving him away. The Flyers also have been talking extension with him in the last 24 hours.
27. Cody Franson - 10% - Depends on the fit and the return for Tim Murray. Franson is a bit of a maligned player around the league, you'd think he'd have more value but only a few teams have really sniffed on the market for him.
28. Valtteri Filppula - 5% - It sounds like Tampa Bay has asked Filppula to waive his NMC for one team. That likely means there's only one team on the bidding. Yzerman would have to get really creative to move him and also has to keep in mind his playoff situation.
29. Jordan Eberle - 5% - This deal screams offseason, but a few teams have kicked tires according to Darren Dreger. Arthur Staple says the Islanders been watching with a close eye. Chiarelli only does this in-season if a specific player target falls on his lap. Dreger also said this morning that the Oilers say he isn't moving, so that's how little the chances are.
30. Marc-Andre Fleury - 5% - Both Elliotte Friedman and Bob McKenzie have reported the chances of Fleury being dealt weren't very large, saying Fleury would be okay to stay for another cup run. As much as Jim Rutherford wants to help him out and give him a place to play, the contract + the terrible goalie market + expansion make this extremely unlikely. Never say never I guess.
31. Sami Vatanen - 5% - Some funky things are going on around the Ducks. A few general managers have scouted them in previous weeks like Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman. The general thought is they need forwards and they have a lot on D to give away. As much as teams may ask for the expansion protected Brandon Montour or Shea Theodore, it's Vatanen that's on a timer with Anaheim due to a few reasons. His contract is much higher than Josh Manson's or the prospects, he's not a favourite of Randy Carlyle's and Montour has shown ability to essentially replace him. Teams are going to knock on Bob Murray's door for Vatanen - provided he's healthy - but a deal is still very unlikely in-season.
